Cairn has a unique opportunity for a skilled and experienced BI Data Engineer to join our expanding IT function with a focus on centralising our Data & Reporting. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience with Microsoft Synapse and Microsoft Fabric, demonstrating strong proficiency in data integration, data modelling, and ETL processes. This role is crucial in transforming data into insights that help drive business decisions. This position reports into Cairn’s BI & Data Analytics Manager.

Key Responsibilities:

Data Integration & ETL Processes

  • Design, develop, and maintain ETL pipelines using Microsoft Synapse.
  • Ensure seamless data integration from various sources into the data warehouse.
  • Optimize ETL processes for efficiency and performance.

Data Modelling & Warehousing

  • Develop and maintain robust data models to support business intelligence and analytics.
  • Implement best practices in data warehousing and data management.
  • Ensure data integrity, accuracy, and security.

Microsoft Fabric Utilisation

  • Utilise Microsoft Fabric to enhance data processing and analytics capabilities.
  • Implement and manage data workflows in Microsoft Fabric for optimal performance.
  • BI Development
  • Development using full Microsoft BI Stack to build interactive and visually appealing dashboards and reports.
  • Working with key stakeholders to define and develop analytical reporting models and data visualisation solutions to enhance business performance monitoring and driving decision-making capabilities
  • Using DAX to help develop complex calculations and data models

Collaboration & Teamwork

  • Work closely with BI developers, data analysts, and other stakeholders to understand data requirements.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to design and implement data solutions.
  • Provide technical guidance and support to team members on best practices and methodologies.

Performance Monitoring & Optimization

  • Monitor and optimize data processing and storage solutions.
  • Identify and resolve performance issues and bottlenecks.
  • Ensure high availability and reliability of data solutions.

Documentation & Reporting

  • Document data workflows, ETL processes, and data models.
  • Generate and maintain technical documentation for reference and reporting purposes.
  • Provide regular updates and reports on data engineering activities and project statuses.

The Candidate;

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Data Science, or a related field. Master’s degree is a plus.

Experience

  • Proven experience (3+ years) as a Data Engineer or in a similar role.
  • Extensive experience with Microsoft Synapse and Microsoft Fabric.
  • Strong background in data integration, ETL processes, and data modelling.

Technical Skills

  • Proficiency in SQL and other database query languages.
  • Experience with data warehousing concepts and technologies.
  • In-depth working knowledge of PowerBI including performance best practices for large data set Views, Dimensions, Cubes, Measures and Partitions
  • Proven ability to design and deploy rich graphic visualizations (following corporate design standards) including scorecards and dashboards using functions such as calculated fields etc
  • Knowledge of programming languages such as Python or R is a plus.

Soft Skills

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork abilities.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Detail-oriented with a focus on data accuracy and quality.
  • Experience in cloud platforms such as Azure.
  • Familiarity with big data technologies and frameworks.
  • Certification in Microsoft Synapse or related technologies.
  • Candidates will ideally have a portfolio of previous PowerBI work to demonstrate visual and functional skillsets.
