The Communications Manager is responsible for developing and delivering a proactive, integrated communications programme that enhances the company’s reputation and supports business objectives. This role covers both external and internal communications, targeting a diverse range of stakeholders including government and state bodies, media, citizens, and employees. The Communications Manager will ensure consistent messaging, build strong relationships with key audiences, and support the Director of Brand & Corporate Communications in advancing the organisation’s narrative and engagement strategy.
Key Responsibilities
- External Communications
- Develop and implement a proactive external communications strategy targeting government, state stakeholders, media, and the wider public.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with journalists, editors, and key opinion formers.
- In partnership with the Communications Agency, draft and distribute press releases, statements, and media materials that support the company’s objectives and reputation.
- Monitor media coverage, manage media enquiries, and prepare spokespeople for interviews and public appearances.
- Identify opportunities for positive media coverage and thought leadership, positioning the company as a leading voice in the sector.
- In collaboration with the senior Corporate Affairs team, manage issues and crisis communications, ensuring timely and effective responses to protect the company’s reputation.
- Internal Communications
- Develop and deliver internal communications plans that inform, engage, and inspire employees.
- Ensure alignment of internal messaging with the company’s purpose, values, and external narrative.
- Prepare for and draft internal newsletters, announcements, and leadership communications.
- Support the Director of Brand & Corporate Communications and senior leaders in communicating key initiatives and business updates.
- Foster a culture of transparency, collaboration, and two-way communication across the organisation.
- Stakeholder Engagement
- Map and prioritise key stakeholder audiences, including government, policy makers, industry bodies, and community groups.
- Develop tailored communications and engagement plans for each audience.
- Support the organisation’s advocacy and public affairs objectives through targeted communications activity.
- Content Creation & Channel Management
- Create compelling content for a range of channels, including website, social media, CairnLive, and presentations.
- Ensure consistency of tone, style, and messaging across all communications.
- Manage the company’s digital presence and support the delivery of campaigns and events.
- Measurement & Reporting
- Monitor, analyse, and report on the effectiveness of communications activity.
- Provide regular updates and insights to the Director of Brand & Corporate Communications and senior leadership.
Key Relationships
- Reports to: Director of Brand & Corporate Communications with dotted line to Director of Public Affairs and Policy
- Key internal stakeholders: Brand team, Marketing, Corporate Affairs, Public Affairs, People/HR, Senior Management Team
- Key external stakeholders: Government and state bodies, media, industry partners, community groups
Required Skills & Experience
- Proven experience in communications, public relations, or journalism, ideally in a corporate or agency environment.
- Strong writing, editing, and verbal communication skills.
- Experience managing media relations and delivering proactive communications programmes.
- Ability to develop and execute internal communications plans.
- Skilled in stakeholder engagement and relationship management.
- Experience in issues and crisis communications is an advantage.
- Proficiency with digital and social media platforms.
- Strong organisational, project management, and multitasking abilities.
