Cairn has a unique opportunity for a high calibre student to join their growing organisation for Summer placement on one of their construction sites across the greater Dublin region (Wicklow, Kildare, Meath, Dublin). This role will enable the successful student to work as part of a wider project team (including Project Managers, Site Managers, Foremen, Senior Engineers, Quantity Surveyors and Health and Safety) and gain valuable insights into Cairn’s self-delivery construction model from planning to completion and handover of the project.
Below are an outline of some of the responsibilities of an intern in their day-to-day role.
Construction Intern
Key responsibilities:
Typically the candidate will be expected to undertake and assist with the following duties:
- Support the Site Management team (Project Manager, Site Manager, Senior Engineer, Finishing Foreman, and Health & Safety Officer).
- Work and learn from the Senior Engineer on setting out the building foundations for the development.
- Assist the Health & Safety officer on maintaining the highest safety requirements and compliance for the site.
- Assist the Finishing Foreman in managing the internal trades to deliver completed houses on time with an exceptional attention to design and detail.
- Learn from the Project/Site Manager how the overall site is managed and the program of work is completed.
- Learn and utilise company systems and dashboards, including but not limited to quality and programming.
- Partake in with company culture initiatives.
- Additional projects as required.
Health & Safety Intern
Key Responsibilities:
Typically the candidate will be expected to undertake and assist with the following duties:
- Work as part of the Cairn Homes Construction management team to ensure the provision of a safe and productive work environment.
- Assist the Health & Safety officer on maintaining the highest safety requirements and compliance for the site.
- Always seek to improve the standard of Health & Safety in a practical manner within the company management system and on specific sites.
- Monitor and enforce the implementation of Cairn Homes Health & Safety Management System.
- Identify site specific hazards and ensure they are addressed in the site documentation and in a practical manner on the site.
- Ensure clear lines of communication are maintained to the H&S Manager.
- Ensure the site folders and statutory records are being maintained on site.
- Ensure strict adherence to site rules by all contractors.
- Assist site management to comply with statutory H&S requirements.
- Assist Site management to ensure Contractor Compliance on Cairn Homes Sites.
- Assist H&S Manager and Site management to coordinate the safe systems of work for contractors.
- Enforce site specific disciplinary procedures.
- Contribute to accident and incident investigation.
Quantity Surveying Intern
Key responsibilities:
Typically, the candidate will be expected to undertake and assist with the following duties:
- Assisting the Senior QS to manage subcontract packages and overseeing payments to subcontractors, suppliers and consultants along with normal QS duties.
- Experience of RC frame / apartment and residential building / commercial projects ideal, but not essential
- Assisting the Senior QS to assist with the preparation of monthly internal valuations and monthly cost reports
- Reporting on budgets and variations.
- Maintaining subcontractor and supplier contractual details
The Candidate;
- Currently in relevant 3rd level education course.
- Eagerness and enthusiasm to learn.
- Strong communication skills both written and verbal.
- Strong attention to detail and the ability to work under pressure.
- Ability to take initiative and the drive to get things done.
